Essex County Courthouse

The Essex County Courthouse is one the most significant examples of the American Renaissance, during which period art was integrated into civic architecture. Cass Gilbert selected prominent artists Edwin Blashfield, Kenyon Cox, Charles Yardley Turner, William Low and Howard Pyle to create magnificent murals on the historic courthouse’s plaster walls. Elmer Garnsey designed the architectural ornament.

EverGreene was responsible for the fine arts conservation of plaster, murals and paintings, the restoration of ornamental plaster and decorative finishes, including gilding, the restoration and replication of pastiglia, and the refinishing of the oak, mahogany and walnut paneling. Ten courtrooms and all significant public spaces were conserved and restored.
