Rockefeller Center Atlas Statue

New York, NY

The widely-recognized 40-foot-high Atlas statue was sculpted by Lee Lawrie, cast in bronze, and installed in 1936. Analysis revealed that it had been repeatedly coated with lacquer instead of the original wax finish for the last thirty years, and possibly as early as 1937. To return the statue to its originally intended finish, EverGreene began by removing all post-historic coatings with a neutral PH paint remover. Minimal corrective patination was performed to harmonize the color, and then a wax finish consisting of two hot and two cold wax layers was applied.
