1920's Apartment Building Lobby

Washington, DC

During the restoration project of this early 20th-century apartment building in the prestigious Kalorama district of  Washington DC, we developed and implemented conservation and restoration treatments for the marble steps, mosaic tile floors, scagliola plaster columns, and the wainscot and terra cotta ornaments in the lobby and on the entrance façade. Working with the co-op board and architect, specific treatments for each ornamental and decorative architectural element were developed, tested, and mocked up for approval prior to implementation. Treatments included gentle and comprehensive cleaning ranging from detergent washing to fine diamond honing, replacement of lost tesserae in the mosaic floors with matching tiles, faux finishing, and inpainting losses of scagliola and terra cotta, and general conservation consultation.
