African American Civil War Memorial

Washington, DC

The Memorial and Museum commemorates the contribution of African American soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. The memorial includes a free-standing bronze surrounded by stone terraces which include stainless steel plaques engraved with the names of known and fallen veterans.

The plaques had suffered over the decade since installation from wear and deformation. We were engaged to study the conditions and develop a conservation plan to restore the plaques as part of a larger project undertaken by the project architect to address a number of conditions. After careful study and assessment, recommendations were developed and contract documents prepared following approval by the National Park Service, who maintain the site.
