Atlas Statue

Rockfeller Center, New York, NY

EverGreene undertook conservation treatment of the famous Atlas Statue. Over decades, the four-story-high, two-ton bronze statue had been caked with so much lacquer and wax that its surface had darkened and deadened. EverGreene managed the challenging scaffolding logistics for this busy public space and proposed the means and methods of removing the post-historic coatings by creating a unique paint remover to prevent disturbing the original patina.

During the six-week conservation of this New York City Landmark, EverGreene provided treatment by  first cleaning the statue to remove post-historic coatings, spot repatination consistent with its historic appearance; and providing protection with a conservation coating that is non-yellowing and reversible.
