Restoration of Grotto Pool Deck and Metal Sculpture—Private
A salt water pool extends under the north side of the Vizcaya house, starting outside and ending within the basement level in a shell-lined grotto. There is a marble tiled floor and playful lead sculpture of a reclining putto in the grotto, which was used as the entrance to the pool from within the house. A century of use and exposure to salts had led to deterioration of both, leaving broken tiles, discoloration of the sculpture and base, and a haze of deposits on the floor.
We restored the marble floor and sculpture under contract to the museum. The marble floor was cleaned with a sequence of poultices to remove stains, fills and repairs to losses and careful honing and polishing. The sculpture and base were cleaned and the lead was patinated and coated.
