Dura-Europos Synagogue

Dura-Europos was a small trading city on the river Euphrates. Before it was destroyed in 256-257 CE, the synagogue was requisitioned and filled with sand as defense against the Persians. The city was abandoned, and the burried wall-paintings of the synagogue were left mostly intact.
EverGreene was commissioned by the Jewish Museum to reproduce the earliest surviving biblical narrative cycle, the frescoed façade of the Dura Europos synagogue, which was uncovered by archeologists in 1935 in Syria. Originally painted circa 244 CE, this three-quarter-sized reproduction is on permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York City.
