Georgia State Capitol Dome
Completed in 1889, the Georgia State Capitol was constructed following Atlanta’s designation as the state capital in 1877. Designed in the Neoclassical style, the building is one of Georgia’s most recognizable historic landmarks. Its iconic gold dome has long been a defining feature of Atlanta’s skyline, crowned by the statue of the Goddess of Liberty, affectionately known as “Miss Freedom.”
EverGreene Architectural Arts has contributed to the preservation of this landmark on two occasions: first during an interior restoration in 2000, and again in 2024 to restore the gilded exterior dome and cupola.
EverGreene’s restoration specialists undertook the meticulous process of regilding both the Capitol’s main dome and its smaller cupola dome. The project began with the careful removal of existing coatings down to bare metal, followed by thorough surface preparation to establish a sound foundation for the new gilding.
The surfaces were then gilded using 23.75-karat, 22-gram gold leaf applied with a lead-free, exterior-grade gilding size formulated for durability and long-term performance. Combining traditional gilding craftsmanship with modern materials and techniques, EverGreene restored the dome’s brilliant golden finish, helping preserve its architectural significance and enduring presence on Atlanta’s skyline.
