Christ Church

Newton, NJ

Christ Church has a rich history that extends beyond the construction of their current church building. First organized in 1769, Christ Church is the third oldest parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and the oldest church in Newton. In the early days of their founding, parishioners gathered in Sussex County Courthouse because they did not yet have a church to call their own. Construction of the current church started in 1868 and finished in the following year. The church complex has expanded over the years.

With centuries of use, Christ Church needed repair. EverGreene was contracted in 2015 to help restore the historic building. Delaminating paint was the main issue that needed to be addressed within the church. Our teams addressed the problems with new straight painting and added stenciling on the nave and chancel ceilings. The church, which is listed on the National and New Jersey Register of Historic Places, exemplifies the Gothic Revival style of architecture.
