Montefiore Medical Center Children’s Hospital
Creating themed environments are making health care facilities warm and welcoming. In the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center, the healing power of family-centered care, community, nature, and scientific discovery are expressed in an unprecedented variety of artworks created by EverGreene Architectural Arts’ craftspeople and artisans.
EverGreene artists engaged in a collaborative design process with the Rockwell Group, using sketches, maquettes, models, and full-scale samples to stimulate discussion. Artworks were designed, created and installed by artists and sculptors in EverGreene’s New York studio for installation on the 8th and 9th floor elevator lobbies and playrooms, and as signage on the 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th floors. Our collaborative efforts resulted in murals of community gardens, city parks, and farms; mosaics; mixed-media dioramas; and encaustic paintings. The murals and artwork for the Children’s Hospital are reminiscent of drawings in children’s books to bolster morale and aid in the physical and emotional healing process of the patients.
Additionally, the front of the lobby desk at the Suzanne Pincus Family Learning Place in the hospital is a lunar landscape, The Sea of Tranquility, carved from a block of plaster by EverGreene sculptor Kosta Danev. Our team additionally designed the lighted glass-blown moon sculpture which sits on top of the desk.
