National Zoological Park Retainer Wall
Washington, DC
Decorative painters carefully blended colors to create a custom, hyper-realistic stone façade for the 43 foot-tall and 900 foot-long General Service Building Retaining Wall at the National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo.
Our artists used five different Keim mineral paint colors and a multitude of painting techniques, including glazing and stippling, to transform the cast concrete wall into a faux stone that mimics the appearance of the real stone found in nearby Rock Creek Park. To complete the project, artisans sealed the formwork with Keim Concretal dilution and Keim Lazur.
The National Zoo is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
