Oklahoma State Capitol

Completed in 2001 after decades of phased construction, the Oklahoma State Capitol was finally crowned with its long-planned dome, fulfilling the vision of the building’s original designers. The addition of the dome introduced a new decorative palette that differed from the Capitol’s earlier interior finishes, creating an opportunity to develop a cohesive decorative program that honored both periods of the building’s history.

In 2015, EverGreene conducted a historic finishes investigation throughout the Capitol’s public interiors. Through archival research, paint analysis, and field investigations, conservators identified the building’s original decorative color schemes, materials, and painting techniques. Based on these findings, EverGreene developed a historically informed decorative program that recreated the original finishes while thoughtfully incorporating colors inspired by the newly completed dome to visually unify the Capitol’s historic and contemporary architectural elements.

Building on the findings of the study, EverGreene returned in 2018 to produce full-scale mockups demonstrating the proposed decorative treatments. The recreated finishes included intricate polychromy, hand stenciling, metallic gold accents, translucent glazing, and a faux ashlar block finish for the Capitol’s public corridors. Following the successful review of the mockups, EverGreene was awarded the contract to execute the decorative painting program throughout the building, bringing a unified, historically appropriate vision to one of Oklahoma’s most significant civic landmarks.
