The Old Post Office Grand Ballroom

Washington, D.C.

Built from 1892 to 1899, the Old Post Office Building functioned as both the U.S. Post Office Department’s headquarters and Washington’s primary postal facility through 1914. Despite facing multiple demolition proposals over the decades and undergoing various renovations, the structure found new life in 2013 when The Trump Organization and partners secured the lease. They transformed it into the Trump International Hotel, Washington D.C., which welcomed guests in 2016. After changing ownership in 2022, the property relaunched as the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC. The hotel conversion required extensive interior and exterior restoration, including installing a new skylight to replace the original and developing public areas, conference facilities, lounges, and accommodations throughout the building.

The 13,000 square-foot Grand Ballroom represents one of the hotel’s signature spaces, marketed as offering the most expansive ballroom and event capacity in its competitive set. This impressive venue occupies the footprint of the former East Wing, originally constructed in 1902 but substantially altered through successive modifications. The comprehensive renovation balanced historical preservation with contemporary luxury upgrades and modern functionality. EverGreene artists and craftspeople used Italian Composition gold leaf to gild the ornamental plaster columns, pilaster, panels and archways in the Grand Ballroom and more than 1,400 rosettes that decorate the elevators. By mobilizing a large crew, EverGreene was able to complete the project in less than five weeks.
