St. Cecilia Catholic Church

Ames, IA

Built in the 1970s, St. Cecilia Catholic Church, a Franciscan parish, reflected the architectural sensibilities of its time, lacking many of the classical elements that traditionally evoke the eternal and transcendent realities of the heavenly kingdom.

In 2025, SVPA led a comprehensive renewal of the church. The removal of a 20-foot-wide section of the original roof disrupted the building’s dominant horizontal emphasis, introducing a stronger sense of procession along with increased height and natural light. This shift toward a vertical orientation marked a dramatic transformation and created new opportunities for artistic expression.

EverGreene designed and executed original murals depicting Christ Enthroned, alongside St. Cecilia (patron of the parish) and St. Francis (patron of the Franciscan order). The result is a renewed interior that honors the church’s history while offering a luminous, elevated, and spiritually resonant space for worship.
