Restoring Michigan Central Station

Nestled in the heart of Detroit, the Michigan Central Station stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and its unwavering spirit of renewal. The recent restoration of this iconic landmark has not only revived its architectural splendor but has also rekindled a sense of pride among Detroiters. We are proud to have been at the forefront of this monumental project!

A Journey Through Time

Constructed in 1913, Michigan Central Station was once the bustling hub of Detroit’s transportation network. Its Beaux-Arts design, characterized by grandiose elements and intricate details, made it a symbol of the city’s prosperity. However, as the years passed and the automobile industry boomed, the station’s glory faded, leaving it in a state of neglect.

The station’s revival began with Ford’s acquisition in 2018, envisioning it as part of their new Corktown hub for transportation and electric vehicle innovation. The restoration project, which spanned over six years, involved more than 3,100 workers and 1.7 million combined work hours. The dedication to detail was paramount, with efforts to restore as many original features as possible, including the 29,000 Guastavino ceiling tiles in the grand hall.

Craftsmanship Par Excellence

Our team offered world-class craftsmanship to the fore in this project. The company’s expertise in decorative plasterwork was pivotal in restoring approximately 56,000 square feet of decorative plaster, a hallmark of the station’s interior. Their approach combined traditional techniques with modern technology, such as three-D printing, to recreate some of the building’s artifacts.

The ornamental plaster techniques employed by EverGreene are a blend of art and science. The company’s artisans meticulously replicated the station’s original plasterwork, which was designed to mimic stone—a cost-saving measure at the time of construction. This intricate work included the restoration of the plaster ceiling flowers in the ticketing corridor, bringing back to life the station’s historic charm.

A Symbol of Detroit’s Resilience

The restoration of Michigan Central Station is more than just a construction project; it’s a symbol of Detroit’s resilience and its ability to reinvent itself. The station’s transformation from a battered reminder of decline into a monument of civic pride showcases the city’s leadership in urban revitalization.

As Michigan Central Station reopened its doors June 2024, it stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. The exceptional care and craftsmanship of EverGreene plasterwork serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy and we are proud to have worked alongside all of the skilled tradespeople and artisans who keep Detroit’s architectural wonders alive. This restoration project is not just about bringing back the past; it’s about inspiring the future.
