Memorial Amphitheater Mortar Analysis

EverGreene conservators performed analysis of mortar samples collected from Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Amphitheater. The purpose of the mortar analysis was to characterize the material constituents and morphology of representative samples of existing mortar, to inform future repointing and repair efforts. Areas of sampling were photo-documented and were brought back to EverGreene’s DC-Based Studio for analysis. Analysis was performed according to ASTM C1324, year, “Standard Test Method for Examination and Analysis of Hardened Masonry Mortar.” All samples were selected for petrographic analysis using thin-section petrography and acid digestion.
