Castro Theatre, Study
The Castro Theatre, located in the Castro District in San Francisco California, was built in 1922 by Timothy L. Pflueger. The design of the Castro Theatre highly reflects the Spanish Colonial Baroque Façade. With its famous leatherette ceiling, it can host over 1,400 individuals and is still widely populated to this day.
EverGreene was retained by Page & Turnbull to conduct historic finishes investigations of painted finishes within the Castro. The purpose of the investigation was to both identify historic color palettes and decorative finish schemes and to provide recommendations for future conservation and restoration of the interior architectural surfaces of the theater. EverGreene collected 29 extracted samples from selected areas, surveyed plaster conditions, and the exposure of underlying finishes was carried out. Investigations were conducted on the loggias, murals, walls, balcony soffit, and main ceiling of the auditorium with access provided from fixed scaffolding on the balcony level.
