Fisher Building

Detroit, MI

Completed in 1928 and designed by Albert Kahn Associates, the Fisher Building is one of the country’s finest examples of Art Deco architecture and a National Historic Landmark. Often referred to as Detroit’s Largest Art Object, the building features an extraordinary three-story arcade lined with more than forty varieties of marble and crowned by a richly decorated barrel-vaulted ceiling designed by Hungarian artist Géza Maróti. Conceived as a destination for commerce, culture, and entertainment, the building continues to serve as a prominent office, retail, and theater complex within Detroit’s historic New Center district.

Following decades of deferred maintenance, the building underwent a comprehensive restoration as part of a multi-phase capital improvement program initiated after new ownership acquired the property in 2015. Restoration of the monumental arcade ceiling, which covers a three-story arcade that is heavily detailed with gold leaf and elaborate, hand-painted frescoes, marked one of the first major preservation efforts, addressing extensive water infiltration that had damaged decorative plaster, painted finishes, and Maróti’s original murals.

EverGreene was entrusted with conserving and restoring the building’s highly ornamented lobby and arcade. The team stabilized and consolidated water-damaged ornamental plaster, repaired areas of loss, and recreated missing decorative details using traditional materials and techniques. Conservators carefully cleaned and restored over 1 million square feet of murals and decorative painting, removing accumulated soiling while preserving original finishes and artistic intent. Areas of paint loss were meticulously inpainted, and deteriorated ornamental surfaces were repaired to reintegrate the historic decorative program. Throughout the project, EverGreene worked to retain as much original material as possible while ensuring the long-term stability of the building’s significant architectural artwork.

The restoration returned one of Detroit’s most celebrated interior spaces to its original brilliance, revealing the vibrant color, craftsmanship, and artistic richness of Géza Maróti’s design while helping reestablish the Fisher Building as a centerpiece of Detroit’s ongoing revitalization.
