Mother of Mercy Chapel
EverGreene collaborated with William Heyer Architect and CK Construction to develop and implement a new liturgical artistry program for the sanctuary and nave at the Mother of Mercy Chapel of St. Charles Preparatory School.
The project unfolded in two phases: concept and design followed by production and installation. As part of EverGreene’s commitment to beautifying student chapels—sacred environments where young minds and hearts are formed—the team developed a program that aligned with the architecture while reflecting the school’s theological mission.
The design phase included black-and-white sketches, preliminary budgets, and a color palette that was coordinated with existing finishes. The process remained collaborative throughout, incorporating feedback from the architect and construction team. A central focus of the design was the sanctuary apse, where EverGreene prioritized preserving the existing image of Christ Enthroned. New artwork was composed to surround and elevate this image, integrating it into a cohesive theological and visual program.
The final scope included a painted sanctuary ceiling depicting St. Charles Borromeo, Mary, the New Jerusalem, angels, tetramorphs, and the Holy Spirit, decorative treatments for the barrel vault, and twelve saint medallions along the nave walls framed by coordinating borders. The selected saints—including St. Maria Goretti, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati—serve as moral exemplars for the student body. Additional elements included architectural lettering and spandrel decoration designed to unify the space.
Much of the artwork was produced on canvas in EverGreene’s Brooklyn studio and installed on-site, with additional in-situ mural work completed as required.
