Mercy Housing Mural Assessment

3013 24th Street marks the north entrance of Balmy Alley in the Mission District, which is a one-block long signature walkway of the most concentrated mural collection in the city of San Francisco. Over five hundred murals have been created in the Mission District as part of the Mission mural movement. Each has its unique story, history, and significance to the local community.

We worked directly with Mercy Housing California to perform documentation and assessment of large-scale murals applied to three facades of 3013 24th Street. The purpose of the project was to document the murals in fine detail, to facilitate a planned re-creation process.

Our team documented the entire mural in a grid by grid system. High resolution photography using a calibrated scale and color board was employed to capture details and colors of each element on the murals. High quality, rectified overall images were obtained for the murals Sandy and The Five Sacred Colors of Corn. In addition, EverGreene provided conservation recommendations for the removal and storage of applied wood components of The Five Sacred Colors of Corn mural.
