Repair and Restoration of Historic & Architectural Masonry Surfaces
Proper cleaning of historic concrete and traditional masonry materials requires long-standing as well as modern high-tech means and methods. To avoid damage to historic surfaces with deteriorated masonry materials, it is important to understand the limitations and advantages of different cleaning approaches. New and innovative cleaning techniques including laser ablation, CO2 blasting, chemical poultices, low pressure micro-abrasion and other methods will be discussed along with the uses and benefits of each. Attendees will have a better understanding of masonry substrates and associated cleaning concerns and application methods, in addition to knowing when a conservation professional should be called in due to the significance or sensitivity of the substrate.
