A New Dawn For Sandusky State Theatre

After severe weather collapsed large portions of nearly century-old Sandusky State Theatre in 2020, preserving the building and its decorative art was a priority but certain parts simply couldn’t be saved. During pre-construction planning, original design elements inspired the creative process for new, decorative murals on either side of the stage and for the reimagined new ceiling. The design concept was called “after the storm,” a reflection of the beautiful sunset on that June night that gave rise to triumph over tragedy.

“The most captivating murals are driven by a strong narrative. We envisioned sunshine after the storm, and this theme is woven into the murals that now grace the walls and ceiling.”
Alan Carroll, EverGreene Creative Director

The story of the Sandusky State Theatre’s destruction and consequent restoration showcases how custom-designed decorative finishes can not only breathe new life into a space but become an intricate part of its continued story. In collaboration with participating stakeholders, EverGreene incorporated the theater’s most recent events throughout the newly created main auditorium murals.

To symbolize the theater’s new beginning, the colors in the sky subtly transition from darker hues in the back of the auditorium to lighter tones approaching the stage. While the sun isn’t directly depicted, its presence is implied through the treatment of highlights and shadows cast on the landscape. Photographs taken from various vantage points of the theater served as reference points to ensure an authentic representation. Flora, native to the lakeshore, was meticulously incorporated. The new murals on the side of the stage depict the four seasons, representing passage of time. The monumental cloudy sky mural adorning the new ceiling depicts the sky over Lake Erie after the storm, contributing to a cohesive and visually stunning experience for the theatre’s patrons. It spans 70 x 30 feet in size, making it the largest mural EverGreene has created to date.

Furthermore, EverGreene worked hand-in-hand with the architect, contractor, and engineering team to replicate and restore the extensively damaged plaster ornamentation and other decorative finishes, and provided new designs for various architectural features within the auditorium and grand lobby.
