Tony Smith's Cigarette Sculpture

Cigarette is a large, hollow, welded steel sculpture by Tony Smith that emblematic of his eccentric geometric sculptures from the 1960’s and 1970’s. In preparation for a planned re-painting campaign, we surveyed and tested the paint on this circa 1970 steel version. We inspected the exterior and interior surfaces, performed pull off tests, studied micrographic paint stratigraphy, and developed plans to remove the paint and re-coat the work.
