African American Civil War Memorial

Washington, DC

The African American Civil War Memorial commemorates the contribution of African-American soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. The memorial includes a free-standing bronze sculpture surrounded by stone terraces. The stone terraces include stainless steel plaques engraved with the names of known and fallen veterans. In total, there are 209,145 names on the monument.

The plaques had suffered wear and degradation over the decade since their installation. We were engaged to assess the conditions of the monument and develop a conservation treatment plan to revitalize the plaques. This project was part of a larger effort to address a number of issues. After careful study and assessment, recommendations were made and submitted for the approval of the National Park Service, who maintains the site.
