Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

The new church, dedicated as the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, was completed in 2018. Designed by McCrery Architects, the cathedral draws on the traditions of classical and sacred architecture, with a cruciform plan, soaring nave, prominent dome, and richly articulated sanctuary.

EverGreene was commissioned to develop and execute a new liturgical artistry program that was integrated with the architecture and its theological narrative.

At the heart of the program is the cathedral’s 90-foot-high cupola, where monumental murals depict the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus surrounded by Mary, Joseph, and the twelve apostles, each bearing an instrument associated with his martyrdom. In the lower registers, sixteen saints walk amid a renewed Eden, connecting the heavenly imagery above with the earthly Church below.

Throughout the cathedral, additional decorative and iconographic elements reinforce this visual narrative. Veil and jewel motifs, passages of scripture, and richly ornamented borders complement depictions of the four Evangelists and their traditional tetramorph symbols in the pendentives. Behind the sanctuary, a subtle shimmering pattern evokes the Tree of Jesse mosaic at the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome. The murals, ornament, symbolism, and architecture create an immersive sacred environment in which traditional Catholic iconography is expressed through newly commissioned artwork created specifically for the cathedral.
