Joel M. Pritchard Building Art Conservation

Olympia, WA

Completed in 1958, the Joel M. Pritchard Building was designed by architect Paul Thiry and occupies a prominent site south of the domed Legislative Building in Olympia, Washington. As the last addition to the Olmsted-designed campus, the building holds individual designation on the National Register of Historic Places and served as the Washington State Library prior to damage from the 2001 Nisqually earthquake. A substantial rehabilitation of the building is currently underway, including a 3-story extension.

EverGreene was contracted to conduct a detailed condition assessment and offer site protection, removal, and later reinstallation of four works of art:

  • Kenneth Callahan Mural(1958)
  • James Fitzgerald Mosaic (1959)
  • Mark Tobey Painting (1959)
  • Everett DuPen Fountain

Our conservators performed a detailed assessment all four pieces on site. The Fitzgerald mosaic and the DuPen fountain were given appropriate protection to safeguard them during construction. Additionally, conservators carefully removed the Callahan Mural and the Mark Tobey painting and placed them in storage until they can be treated and reinstalled upon completion of the restoration in July of 2026.
