Vision Theatre

The Vision Theatre, formerly known as the Leimert Theatre, was built in 1932 in Leimert Park Village, a Los Angeles neighborhood. It was originally proposed by developer Walter Leimert as a part of one of his developments. The building is a combination of Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival styles, and is one of the last two Art Deco theaters in the Los Angeles area. Several different artists contributed to the interior finishes, including Anthony Heinsbergen, who created the ceiling mural in the auditorium. The Leimert Theatre was in operation until 1968.

It was sold to the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the late 1970s, when it became known as the Watchtower. In the early 1990s it was sold again to actress Marla Gibbs. She renamed it the Vision Theatre and intended on turning it into a performing arts space. Ownership transferred to the City of Los Angeles in the late ’90s and management to the Department of Cultural Affairs. The City completed an $11 million dollar rehabilitation in 2012, returning the front section of the theatre to community use.

EverGreene was engaged by the Royal Construction Company and the City of Los Angeles to conserve the auditorium ceiling mural and substrate, as well as replicate the historic auditorium walls and proscenium. The conservation of the auditorium ceiling included testing to determine the appropriate methods of conservation. The ceiling then underwent conservation cleaning, any required consolidation, isolating varnish, and any necessary inpainting. Plaster repairs were performed as required, and were painted to match the existing. The auditorium walls had non-historic existing tiles removed, and the plaster underneath was patched. The auditorium walls and proscenium were then prepped, painted, stenciled, and had the application of Dutch metal, where appropriate, to match existing finishes. The ceiling reverse and catwalk were also vacuum cleaned. In addition, metal grilles on the auditorium ceiling were cleaned and repaired. Our crew also stripped, stained, and varnished the auditorium doors.
