West Virginia State Capitol Sculptures

Charleston, WV

EverGreene conservators performed maintenance and repair on several notable monuments of the West Virginia State Capitol Campus in 2019. The works included the Liberty Bell (a copy of the Philadelphia original), the Lincoln Walks At Midnight, the Fallen Partner memorial the West Virginia Coal Miner, and the Fallen Firefighters memorials.

The scope of work included a comprehensive cleaning, removing surface corrosion from surfaces of all steel and iron members and applying a rust-inhibitive coating where appropriate, reducing copper and oil staining, and protecting adjacent surfaces during the process. The yoke of the Liberty Bell was recreated from a single massive oak beam.

The first phase included the treatment of the Liberty Bell monument and sculpture. The second phase included the Fallen Partner monument, the West Virginia Coal Miner, and the Fallen Firefighters.
