After The Storm: A New Chapter For Sandusky Theatre

On June 10, 2020, a powerful storm swept through Sandusky, Ohio, tearing the roof off the century-old Sandusky State Theatre and causing the auditorium ceiling to collapse. The stage, portions of the seating areas, and many of the theatre’s intricate decorative finishes were severely damaged or destroyed. While preserving the historic building and its architectural artistry remained a priority, some elements were simply beyond repair.

What emerged from the devastation was an opportunity to honor the theatre’s past while creating something entirely new.

The theatre’s original decorative elements and a beautiful sunset that followed the devastating storm provided inspiration for a series of new murals flanking the stage and auditorium ceiling, symbolizing renewal, resilience, and triumph over tragedy.

“The most captivating murals are driven by a strong narrative. We envisioned sunshine after the storm, and this theme is now woven into the wall and ceiling murals.”
Alan Carroll, EverGreene Creative Director

Rather than simply replacing what was lost, the new artwork became a part of the building’s continuing story. Across the auditorium, the sky transitions from darker hues at the rear to lighter, warmer tones approaching the stage, evoking the clearing skies after a storm. Although the sun itself is never depicted, its presence is suggested through carefully composed highlights and shadows across the landscape.

To create an authentic sense of place, EverGreene’s artists drew on photographs taken from various vantage points around the outside of the theatre, incorporating native lakeshore vegetation and familiar elements of the Lake Erie landscape.

Flanking the stage, new murals depict the four seasons, symbolizing the passage of time and the enduring cycle of renewal. Overhead, a monumental cloud-filled sky stretches across the reconstructed auditorium ceiling, capturing the atmosphere above Lake Erie after the storm. Measuring 70 by 30 feet, it is the largest mural EverGreene has created to date. Together, the ceiling and wall murals create an immersive environment that connects the theatre’s architecture, its surroundings, and its remarkable story of recovery.

EverGreene also restored and replicated extensively damaged ornamental plasterwork and historic decorative finishes. The team developed new designs for architectural features throughout the auditorium and grand lobby, thoughtfully integrating historic craftsmanship with contemporary artistry.

The Sandusky State Theatre’s transformation demonstrates how restoration can go beyond recovering what was lost. Through custom-designed decorative finishes and a compelling artistic narrative, the theatre’s most difficult chapter has become part of its renewed identity.
