NYPD Times Square Mosaic Restoration

New York, NY

In 2018, the NYPD Times Square Substation underwent extensive reconstruction to update the facility technology and exterior. EverGreene was hired to restore both exterior mosaic murals and preserve the presence of the static maps, which stand juxtaposed against the jarring lights and activity of Times Square. The map mosaics reflect the City as it appeared when it was built in 1957.

The NYPD mosaics first underwent stabilization and conservation treatments by the EverGreene team to protect the mosaic from damage during the construction work. After consolidating damaged and unstable areas, another condition assessment was performed post-construction. This involved replacing and matching existing tesserae, infilling cracks, replacing areas of metal and missing landmark ornaments, and cleaning the surface of soiling, paint drips, and spray paint.
