Mission Concepción
San Antonio, TX
A National Historic Landmark and part of San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, Mission Concepción was built in the Spanish Colonial style. Dedicated in 1755, Mission Concepción is America’s oldest, unrestored stone church. Vivid geometric patterns once decorated the facade and interior, but they have mostly worn away.
Our conservation team performed extensive materials and methods testing to preserve the sensitive paints, frescoes, and lime plaster that remain. Conservators performed both lime plaster stabilization and consolidation and completed several restoration and conservation treatments. The project was completed in 2012. Mission Concepcion is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
