The Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory

Victoria, TX

Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, Victoria, TX began as a parish church in 1958 and elevated to cathedral status when the Diocese of Victoria was established in 1982. The mid-century modern interior features abstract and figurative murals, statuary and mosaics.  In 2018 Hurricane Harvey, a category four storm, caused devastating damage across the coast of Texas and Louisiana; Our Lady of Victory was one of numerous churches affected by the storm.

EverGreene was commissioned to document and assess the conditions of the artwork and finishes.  The murals were severely water damaged, moldy, and cracked. To conceal previous mold and water infiltration, the wood elements had been stained a dark color, which was incongruous with the historic features.

Our conservators cleaned and re-finished architectural wood features to restore them to their original luster. Wood statuary and signage were taken apart as necessary, repaired, treated, leafed where appropriate, and coated with a protective finish, and the clerestory murals were painstakingly replicated. The restored mid-century Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory looks as good as new!
