Microscopy is the use of a microscope to examine samples collected from the resource to be studied, whether it is an architectural element, object, or work of art. Our conservators employ microscopy to support our understanding and identification of the historical finishes and materials we work with. Findings are documented and guide architectural design decisions for the conservation of historic built environments.

Microscopy is used during finishes investigations, but can also facilitate identification of wood species and characterization of faux finishes such as cast stone materials, faux bois, or decorative plasters like scagliola.
